'Colloid' is a scientific term from Chemistry textbooks back in school. This painting depicts the essense of that word.
 
Smoke, mist, paint and ink are all different types of colloids. Put simply, colloids are mixtures of 2 substances. One of those substances forms a continous 'background' inside which the molecules of the other substance are 'embedded' uniformly.
